James Cotton (1935–2017) was an American blues harmonica player and vocalist from Mississippi. A protégé of Sonny Boy Williamson II, he gained fame as a member of Muddy Waters' band before leading his own group. His powerful, energetic style made him one of the most celebrated blues harmonica players of the 20th century.
